NYC Spots That Inspire Floral Designs

Rachel Cho Flowers | Floral Designer | flower shop

New York City isn’t just another place to live—its eight and half million residents know that its 300 square miles hold hundreds of years of history, iconic art and architecture, world-famous natural spaces, distinctive neighborhoods, and a unique urban lifestyle that has been celebrated in literature and film. From the most well-known tourist spots to neighborhood bodegas, inspiration for floral designs is all around.

The skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan are a daily reminder of the bustling business that drives the city, and the clean lines of the most modern call to mind linear arrangements evoking a sense of sleek verticality. Well-known historic buildings in this borough, like the Empire State Building or the Flatiron Building, however, remind us of the elegant history of the city as well, with classic examples of Art Deco and Beaux Arts style, respectively. Exploring the principles of these design styles is a great way to jumpstart your imagination, whether you prefer the geometric, bold lines of Art Deco or the grandeur of Beaux Arts.

High Line Park Rachel Cho Floral Design

Natural spaces are an essential component of New York life, and they offer another obvious source of ideas. There are over 1,700 parks in New York City. Established in 1853, the most well-known is Central Park; its 843 acres of varied landscapes, from meadows to wooded paths, are a favorite with locals and tourists alike. The High Line, which is only two blocks away from our studio and the city’s only elevated park, offers an oasis of nature planted with wildflowers and grasses along a former rail track. Or you can visit the indigenous forest in Prospect Park. These spots remind us that even in the most densely packed city, you can enjoy the changing of the seasons and their associated flowers and foliage, each with their own colors, textures, and scents.

Union Square Greenmarket, New York City

It isn’t necessary to go to any of New York’s famous spots to find inspiration, however. A trip to one of the Greenmarkets (whether in Union Square or one of their other locations throughout the city) gives you the opportunity to buy fresh seasonal flowers directly from local farmers—a perfect way to let nature guide your design. Bodegas can also be a great place to pick up some locally grown blooms to brighten your home or desk in the office.

With such a plethora of colors, textures, and styles in every setting, New York is a never-ending source of floral ideas. At Rachel Cho Floral Design, creating dynamic designs to meet every client’s vision is our passion. Whether you’re planning an event or simply want a fresh arrangement to brighten your day, we can meet your needs. Contact us today to find out more about our services.
