By the time May arrives, we’ve been through the lion-and-lamb ups and downs of March and the April showers that promise future flowers. When we feel like we’re on the verge of finally enjoying sunny days, it can be discouraging when we’re met instead with day after day of clouds and even rain. If you’re itching to break out your shorts and sandals, it can feel like summer will never get here. Instead of letting it get to you when Mother Nature doesn’t quite have her act together outdoors, bring a little cheer into your home or office with some bright blooms. Here are some suggestions for creating your own summery vibe:
Freesia: These cut-flower favorites have stems with multiple funnel-shaped flowers in a variety of colors from reds and oranges to purples. They have a lovely fragrance, so if you’re tired of closed-up indoor air, freesias can help you feel like you’re enjoying a park instead.
Peonies: Get these gorgeous blossoms while they’re in season—they may not be easy to find once their late spring/early summer blooming season has passed. Their lush, romantic look makes them a great choice if you plan to entertain and want a flower to up the wow factor of your décor.
Delphinium: These showy spikes of blossoms most often come in blues and lavenders, but can also be found in white, pink, and red. They look lovely with other garden-style flowers, or simply clustered in a vase on their own.
Gerbera daisies: For bright colors and big blooms that can’t help but bring a smile to your face, it’s hard to beat Gerbera daisies. A generous vase full of these flowers in a mix of red, orange, yellow, pink, or coral will make your day sunny whether or not there are clouds in the sky. Put them near where you enjoy your morning coffee so the view can perk you up for the day ahead.
Lisianthus: These ruffled blossoms are more hardy than their delicate appearance would suggest. With two to six flowers per stem, you often find them in a charming mix of fully open, partially open, and buds on the same stem, effortlessly lending variety and texture to an arrangement. They come in an assortment of colors such as white, pink, purple, and green. These are perfect if you want to create the feel of an indoor garden!
Of course, these are only suggestions—at this time of year, you’re likely to see many new additions to the floral selections at your local florist, the farmer’s market, or in your favorite bodega.
